Donor Impact

“Vandalism, starting fires, getting in fights — I didn’t really care what I was doing. SNAP showed me that I have a choice in the way I act.”

– Evan, SNAP® Graduate

Evan was in and out of the youth justice system throughout his teenage years. Deeply entrenched in gang life, he was known for his violent outbursts and aggressive behaviours. After years of resisting help, Evan finally agreed to participate in Child Development Institute’s (CDI) SNAP® program at 17 years old. The results were transformative.

Through CDI’s support, Evan learned to manage his emotions, walk away from confrontations, and change his trajectory. Today, he is back in school, enrolled in anger management courses, and is no longer defined by his past. “Not being angry all the time actually feels good,” Evan shared. “It’s amazing to know that I’m able to and worthy of feeling positive about myself.”

Hear from Abdi Mohamud, CDI’s SNAP Youth Leadership Services Coordinator, about the importance of early intervention for children and youth.

Your support can make a difference

Research studies have shown that early intervention can divert youth from the criminal justice system and save up to $1.2 million per chronic offender.*

Research shows that 60% of incarcerated men have a history of disruptive behaviour in childhood. CDI’s evidence-informed early intervention programs provide the critical support necessary to give children a chance before they head down a more dangerous path. Abdi, CDI SNAP Youth Leadership Services Coordinator, says, “The first thing I think about is, ‘Oh man, we should have gotten to you like six, seven years ago, and there would have been a good shot at changing your trajectory.’ ”

Children can’t wait until next year: each day of delay can make a difference in a child’s future. By making your generous gift today, you are not only investing in life-changing support for children like Evan, you are also easing the pressure on our education, health and social justice systems.

With mental health challenges among children and youth at an all-time high, your support is more urgent than ever before. In 2023-24, CDI served 170% more children and youth compared to two years ago. While CDI was there for Evan during a pivotal time in his life, there are hundreds of children still waiting for access to this life-changing support. Together, we can change lives and build stronger communities.
