Our Workshops

Child Development Institute (CDI) offers Learning Disabilities and Mental Health (LDMH) workshops each winter, spring and fall. These 90 minute sessions are designed for caregivers of children with learning disabilities, as well as family members, educators, counsellors and other interested community members. Led by CDI’s team of experts, the workshops offer current insights from the field, practical strategies, and a deeper understanding of the intersection between learning disabilities and mental health.

September 10, 2026 — Walk A Mile in My Shoes

This experiential and interactive workshop is designed to give participants an understanding of what it might feel like to have a learning disability (LD).

Participants will:

  • Better understand LDs and how they may impact daily functioning
  • Better understand other factors that affect and complicate having an LD
  • Discuss different ways of interpreting challenging and difficult behaviours

September 24, 2026 — Anxiety and Learning Disabilities

In this workshop, we will discuss the role of anxiety in our lives, how it is expressed, and the relationship between anxiety and Learning Disabilities (LDs).

Participants will:

  • Better understand LDs and CDI’s LDMH approach​
  • Review the basics of worry and anxiety​
  • Explore how LDs and anxiety are connected​
  • Discuss strategies to support children and youth with LDs and anxiety

October 8, 2026 — Executive Functioning and Emotion Regulation

This workshop provides participants with an understanding of the nature of executive functioning (higher order thinking skills including planning, organization, and flexibility) for children with learning disabilities (LDs) in this area.

Participants will:

  • Better understand LDs and CDI’s LDMH approach​
  • Learn how executive functioning (EF) and emotion regulation (ER) impact kids​
  • Learn how EF and ER are related to LDs and ADHD​
  • Receive practical strategies to support kids with:​
    • Executive functioning​
    • Emotion regulation

October 22, 2026 — The Social Impact of Learning Disabilities

In this workshop, we will discuss why children with Learning Disabilities (LDs) are at risk for experiencing social challenges with their peers.

Participants will:

  • Better understand LDs and CDI’s LDMH approach​
  • Explore social competence and how it may be impacted by LDs
  • Build skills for supporting young people in strengthening their social competence

November 5, 2026 — Understanding Memory and Learning Disabilities

This experiential workshop is designed to give participants a better understanding of the different types of memory challenges associated with learning disabilities (LDs) (verbal, visual, and working memory).

Participants will:

  • Receive a brief overview of CDI’s framework and LDs​
  • Explore memory basics​
  • Learn about the impact of memory on emotional, behavioural and social well-being​
  • Receive helpful tips and strategies to support children and youth struggling with memory challenges

November 19, 2026 — Supporting Advocacy and Self-Determination

This experiential workshop is designed to help participants explore the importance of self-advocacy and self-determination for children and youth with Learning Disabilities (LDs).

Participants will:

  • Discuss how developing self-awareness, confidence, and communication skills can help children and youth better understand their learning strengths and needs
  • Receive helpful tips on how to support success at home, at school, and in everyday life for children and youth with LDs
  • Learn practical strategies to foster independence, resilience, and self-advocacy in children and youth

Does CDI offer private workshops for organizations?

Yes, our team offers private LDMH workshops, with virtual and in-person* options. Organizations can select from the workshop topics above, or request tailored content for your audience.

Is there a registration fee?

For a limited time only, CDI’s LDMH Workshops are being offered at no cost.

Who can attend these workshops?

CDI’s LDMH workshops are primarily designed for parents and caregivers of children with learning disabilities (LDs). Family and community members, educators, counsellors, and any other interested adults are also welcome.

Are these workshops delivered virtually or in person?

These workshops are delivered virtually through Microsoft Teams. You will receive a meeting link from LDMHcommunity@childdevelop.ca.

Please choose a quiet space with limited distractions, as these workshops will be interactive. Attendees will need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection.
