Child Development Institute (CDI) is fortunate to have a diverse group of supporters, many of whom are committed to taking SNAP to some of Canada’s most vulnerable communities through the SNAP National Expansion Campaign. The entire team at SNAP extends heartfelt gratitude to The Gordon and Ruth Gooder Charitable Foundation for their support in implementing SNAP in Lac Seul First Nation (LSFN), a remote Ontario community located half-way between Winnipeg and Thunder Bay.
The Foundation’s investment enabled CDI’s SNAP team to fulfill a request made in early 2016 by the local Chief of Police, who had heard about the SNAP Program and felt it would be a valuable resource to serve the most at-risk children in Lac Seul. Training was held in early April, with one police officer, a vice-principal and a school secretary now fully prepared to offer the SNAP Program in their community. Thirty teachers in three schools will be trained in SNAP and over the next year they will provide SNAP to approximately 200 elementary school children in three school communities; Obishikokaang Elementary School, Waninitawingaang Memorial School, and Morris Thomas Memorial Christian School. As well, the SNAP 13-week clinical program will be delivered to children and families who are in need of intensive support for behavioural issues at school and at home.
With the official blessing of community elders, the schools, police and Band Office are working closely together to ensure that SNAP is the go-to solution for children experiencing disruptive behaviours, and their families. Through the partnership and commitment of funders like The Gordon and Ruth Gooder Charitable Foundation, CDI’s SNAP team looks forward to helping this community develop a sustainable SNAP culture for lasting change.
